The kids are alright…
“The kids are alright…” I am showing my age here referencing The Who’s 1965 classic, but I think it fits well with this blog.
Think back to when you were in high school. What did those over 40 say about the future when your generation takes the lead? It probably was not something positive. It was likely, “What will happen when these kids take over? We are in real trouble.”
After nearly 40 years of being a high school teacher, let me put your fears to rest. The youth of today are more than capable of leading our country and businesses. Sure, I have concerns, but those who are not on the path of figuring things out now will in the future.
So, what can those of us do to help these young adults grow into the leaders of tomorrow? Here are a few suggestions.
Be positive about the future. It is very easy to talk about how bad things are now and lament how much worse things will get in the future. Use your life experience to explain that everything comes in cycles. There will be ups and downs. Offer guidance about dealing with the downtimes and how these experiences will help us in our future.
Young adults may not realize what their strengths are. Point their strengths out to them and how they could lead to a future career or position of leadership.
Give them a chance to shine! Build their confidence and experience by giving them tasks/leadership roles that will stretch them and promote growth.
Practice what you preach and be authentic because young people can spot a phony from miles away!
Realize that everyone matures and sees their path in life at different times. Sometimes, a seed you plant in a young person’s mind may take a while to grow. Be patient and consistent.
Through mentoring and educating our young adults, we can help them find their place in the world, thus leading to stronger communities in the future.
